War monument in memory of the Battle of the Lys

War memorial commemorating the Battle of the Leie in May 1940, located next to the Leie just before the bridge of Desselgem at the corner with Desselgem-Trakel. In June 1997, during the military parade at the Market in Waregem, the Sixth Artillery donated the turret of a M 109 tank to Desselgem in honor of the 30th anniversary of the affiliation between the Sixth Artillery Regiment and the city of Waregem. In September 1997, the turret of the M 109 tank with cannon was placed on a pedestal and transformed into a monument. In 2008, the turret was replaced by the current Howitzer tank M 108. The tank was donated by the artillery department in Brasschaat during the celebration of V-Day, confirming 40 years of affiliation with the city of Waregem.
