Description
Nr. 2/ Izegemstraat (l. of it). Church of Our Lady Immaculate Conception. Former rag factory Coppin - popularly known as the "slunsekot" - from 1923 probably under the direction of architect V. Duyvewaardt (Roeselare), l. of the partly walled factory yard that has been converted into a car park.
In 1956, the factory became an emergency church for the Stationswijk or hamlet "Kapelle", which was isolated by works on the canal bridge. In 1957, the diocese purchased the factory and the house (cf. no. 2); in 1958-1959, conversion of the factory into a church with a parish hall above it under the direction of architect C. Vastesager (Assebroek) and interior designer W. Vandenbogaerde. The house was converted into a rectory. In 1999, repair of the façade on the Kortrijkstraat and contemporary decoration of the side wall under the direction of architect G. Debruyne (Bruges).
Little changed, right. brick factory building of one or three buildings. under flat roofs; At the rear, extension of 'tower', at the time with industrial function (ventilation shaft ?). On the street, symmetrically conceived façade with higher middle ressault, rhythmed by means of recesses above the parapet. Blind window registers with continuous lower, intermediate and upper lintels enliven the saving fields; analogue, real windows in the side walls. R. side wall with recent garement of grey plaster and new glass portal emphasized by concrete .tower. with metal cross.
Three-aisled, E.W. oriented church interior; The concrete skeleton with pillars (partly clad) has been preserved. L. of the main choir, stained glass window of 1959 by M. Martens (Sint- Andries).
