Bütgenbach dam was built in 1932. Its primary function is to regulate the flow of its main intake, the Warche, which is one of Belgium's most capricious rivers. The reservoir lies between the villages of Bütgenbach and Berg. A power station is located at the foot of the dam.
In the 1950s there was small campsite on the site of what is now Worriken sports and leisure centre. The idyllically located lake, with its lovely 11km circular path, has become a favoured destination for excursions, with its facilities for bathing and water sports, as well as unspoilt nature, among tourists and locals alike.
