The founder of the café was Lambert Michiels (Bare Brem), born in 1897. He was a contractor-brickmaker and baked the cartels on the construction site, while the cellar was dug out. He and his wife Eufrasie Smets were living on the Stoopkensstraat when they extracted a kidney from him in 1931-32. This resulted in a wound of 25 centimeters that remained open for 7 months. It was done with work.
