The church and the dukes of Brabant have a bond. We find their coats of arms and the spire bears a ducal crown. The historical statue of St. Elisabeth of Hungary has been back in court since 2008.
Flax farmer
Legend has it that around 1230, Saint Elisabeth of Hungary was asked to travel to Brabant in a dream. She has to build a church for Our Lady. But where in Brabant? A second vision indicates a flax field on which the church was built.
Miraculous image
In the high choir is the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Alsemberg. Duchess Sofie donated the statue between 1239 and 1242. The church is still a busy place of pilgrimage.
