Approximately in the middle of the Koningsdijk there is a rectangular area on the right side with a large lake, a flagpole and a farm. The Spanish Fort Spinola once stood here. In 1591, Prince Maurice of Nassau temporarily conquered the city of Hulst from the Spanish. Raids were organized in the Waasland. Among other things, the church of Sint-GillisWaas was heavily damaged. In response, the Spaniards built this fort. However, sand extraction and the development of a farm ensured that it is virtually invisible today.
