The Vlaamsepoort 1 was once part of the second city wall surrounding Brussels. Today you stand before the Kleine Ring, at the spot where the Vlaamsesteenweg and the Dansaertstraat converge and where, on the other side of the canal, the Gentsesteenweg begins. At the height of the tram stop stands a mirrored canopy in which the canal water can be seen. More than just a tram shelter, this is an artwork by urban planner Benoît Moritz that aims to restore the connection with the water. The water is indeed very deep here, as there are no locks between the Ninoofsepoort and Zemst
anymore. This speeds up navigation, but results in the water level dropping and the connection with the water disappearing.
