Maiden's Tower in Zichem

The Maiden's Tower in Zichem is a keep, a fortified tower from the 14th century of 26 meters high, with a diameter of 15 meters and with walls more than 4 meters thick. In 1358 William II of Gulik sold Zichem to Reinoud I of Schoonvorst. This included the moated castle of Zichem. The son, Reinoud II van Schoonvorst, had the fortified tower built on the castle grounds around 1383. For the exterior façade of the Maiden's Tower, brown iron sandstone from the region was used. Brick was used for the rest. The wall thickness on the ground floor is 4.10 metres. There was a moat around the tower. The tower had four floors, each with one room. The bottom floor was a basement room. On the first floor was an octagonal reception room with a cross vault with the coat of arms of Reinoud II. The entrance to the tower was on that first floor, accessible via a drawbridge. On the second floor was a living room. Above that on level four was a sleeping area. On the roof there was a defensive platform and lookout over the region. During the restoration of the tower, a new platform was added on top, so that the Maiden's Tower is now once again a place for visitors with a view of the region.
