The Stadswaag is bustling with life, with crowded terraces and students at every hour of the day. Before it became a student neighborhood, it was primarily a center of economic activity. This square was established in 1548 by Gilbert van Schoonbeke, the visionary city developer who redefined Antwerp in the 16th century with new neighborhoods, streets, and squares. Until the 19th century, merchants had to weigh their goods at the 'Nieuwe Waag'. In the 1960s, artists took over the square and it became a nightlife spot. Be sure to look down: in the artistic tree mirrors, Antwerp artists incorporated symbols and stories of the city.
