Meigemheide, Gasthuisbos and Begijnenbos

The area described is located east of Halle, on the territory of the merged municipality of Beersel, with the boroughs of Alsemberg, Dworp and Beersel. It is a zone with enormous variations: marshy areas, valley areas, orchards, spring areas, hollow roads, small landscape elements and embankments. The area is also of great importance for fauna and flora. The landscape is fragmented by the field edge vegetation along the fields and meadows, orchards and plots of forest. The plot forms and the road network hardly changed since the end of the 18th century. However, in the last 50 years there has been a lot of scattered habitation, so that the landscape gives a not really cool impression. The entire area consists of a strongly cut plateau that, in addition to the numerous wooded areas, has many compartmentalized agricultural areas. There are also places with wide views of the Senne and Halle, among others. The compartmentalization is mainly done by wood edges and rows of trees. The deeply incised valleys are home to springs and swamp forests. Many archaeological finds have been made in the area, especially Neolithic and Roman material.
