The chapel of Our Lady of Gaverland was built near the Miraculous Linden tree. About 500 years ago (1511 - 1512), the statue of Our Lady was found three times and returned to the linden tree. The chapel has grown into a place of pilgrimage, and the candlelit linden tree near the choir of the chapel is still the same tree depicted on postcards from the early 20th century. As can be seen, the tree was enclosed with a wooden fence. The tree likely endured a lot during that time because people believed in the miraculous power of trees and other natural elements. Possibly, leaves, twigs, and bark were collected to use as amulets, or the tree was nailed or adorned with rags.
