The area is located in the middle of the province of Limburg and is bordered by the cities of Houthalen-Helchteren, Genk and Zonhoven. The anchorage includes the nature reserves Ten Haagdoornheide and De Teut, which together form one of the most valuable heathland landscapes in Limburg, on the one hand, and the former military domain of Molenheide on the other. The vast heath is crossed by a number of swampy and wooded stream valleys that originate on the Kempen plateau. The Laambeek, Roosterbeek and Slangebeek feed the pond area of Central Limburg and themselves consist of a succession of historic ponds and fens. On the edge of the valley of the Roosterbeek lies the castle domain Engelhof (Hengelhoef), which was originally set up as an agricultural colony of the abbey of Floreffe in the 12th century.
