Simonshuis

In the Simonshuis on Generaal Dempseylaan, the VVV office and the municipal Museum Grevenbroek are located. In the small park, we stand in front of the beautiful villa that was built in 1883 by the Teuten family Simons. Teuten were traveling merchants who from April to October traveled with goods such as linen, leather, copper, and ceramics to Holland, Westphalia, and Denmark, and even to Gdansk. With that activity, it was often possible to earn good money, allowing the families to build fine mansions. The Simonshuis has two floors and five bays, of which the middle one is designed as an entrance door and whose vertical line extends all the way to the roof. The house is constructed of brick, although the corners and the door frame are highlighted with the use of a different type of stone. Two heavy square towers flank the house. By being set somewhat back, they do not dominate the building too strongly. The interior is richly decorated with stucco, including dog heads: a reference to the loyal four-legged friends who accompanied the Teuten on their journeys.
