During the municipal council meeting on July 18, 1919, it was decided that a Tree of Freedom would be planted and that a committee would be established for the creation of the war memorial for the Gentbrugse war victims of 1914-1918. On December 10, 1919, the municipal council decided to take out a loan of 45,000 francs for this purpose. They also planned to apply for subsidies from the state administration. On September 3, 1921, the location was established, and it was stated that the municipality would contribute 30,000 francs. 25,000 francs was reserved for the monument itself and 5,000 francs for organizing the competition to find the right artist. On October 4, the program and regulations for the competition were approved. During the secret session on January 30, 1922, the design by Domien Ingels and Fritz Coppieters was presented. The war monument, called "Heldenhulde," was solemnly and festively inaugurated on September 17, 1922.
