Parish Church of the Holy Family

Parish church erected by order of the church wardens to replace the provisional church of the parish of the Holy Family. This young parish was founded in 1956 in an eastern suburb of Hamme on the former Oostkouter. The new parish church was built according to plans from 1970 to a design by the architects Jean Van den Bogaerde (Sint-Martens-Latem), Jos Van Driessche, Lucien Van Kerckhove (Lokeren). Construction work began on 04.10.1971. The foundation stone was laid on 04.12.1971 and on 02.12.1972 the new parish church was consecrated. The place of worship was located on a designated area between the presbytery and the temporary community church, now the parochial banquet hall Familiazaal. The deep front garden is demarcated by interrupted low and higher walls. On the street side, it is raised on the left to a small campanile and on the right it has a modern cross next to the wide driveway that is partly flanked by walls. As a transition zone, this outdoor space forms a unity with the architectural concept of the church, both visually and structurally.
