Castle of Budingen

Description

The lordship of Budingen has been mentioned since the 15th century as the property of the Rolin family; in 1530 it was acquired by J. de Marnix, through whose family it passed to the Lutzerat family by the end of the 16th century; in 1743 the estate was purchased by P.A. Walckiers, in 1799 by F.B. Ottevaere, and in 1832 by J.B. 't Serstevens, through whom it came into the possession of the de Jonghe d'Ardooie family by marriage. The current building in classical style dates from 1743 but was slightly adapted in a neoclassical style in 1896 (both years in the gable pediment), shortly after the Halle-Edingen road was constructed, causing the former connecting avenue to the ancient Brabant road (Halle-Gaasbeek) to become obsolete (some old beeches in the park and two gate pillars indicate the route). The previously simpler rear facade was clad in blue stone following the model of the front facade (clear difference in stone cuts), and at that time the existing gabled roofs were converted into the current mansard roof (slates). U-shaped building with two floors of five bays with projecting corner risalits of two bays. The facades are vertically articulated by corner pilasters with recessed joints and horizontally rhythmized by two registers of high segmental windows. Center bays crowned with a pediment. The current state square is accessible via gates set between blue stone pillars and is flanked by carriage houses articulated by brick pilasters and round arches. To the north, the castle farm adjoins.
