The Leuvensevaart or the Mechelen-Leuven canal connects the Brabant hinterland with the Scheldt basin; it has a total length of 30 kilometers of which 7.6 kilometers in the province of Antwerp. The current bottom width is 12 meters, the width of the waterline 22 to 32 meters, the water height is 3.5 meters (practically 2.3 meters), the free passage height 6 meters and the total decay 14 meters. The canal has five locks, namely at Tildonk, Kampenhout, Boortmeerbeek, Battel and Zennegat with an average length of 60 meters and an average width of 8.25 meters; only the last two are located on the territory of Mechelen. The canal has only two swing bowls, one in Leuven and one in Kampenhout.
