The location of this Central Cemetery has everything to do with the decree of June 26, 1784, by Emperor Joseph II. And that decree originated from the very unhygienic conditions of how corpses were buried before. Rich people were buried in churches, resulting in unpleasant odors in the church. Hence the term "rich stinker." Regularly, there was a sickening odor nuisance, and due to gas accumulation in the rotting bodies just below the surface of the church floor, one could hear ghastly sounds. Interesting for myths and legends, but somewhat less so for public health. Corpses were often buried on top of each other in cemeteries due to a lack of space around the church. Hence the decision of Joseph II to approach it differently, resulting in this location.
