According to legend, a hundred years ago a shepherd went daily with his sheep past the forest on the Keierberg. Along that road there was a statue of Mary hanging from a tree to which he was very attached. When he gave up his service and went to live in Neeswave, he took the statue with him. The next morning, the statue was gone. When the shepherd once came to Asse, the statue hung again near the forest. He took it back to Neerwater. But the statue disappeared again and hung on the tree in Asse again. When he told what had happened to him, people from far and wide rushed to pray at the statue. The shepherd himself moved again to Asse because he could not live without the statue of Mary.
