Description

The Scheldt has been subject to tidal action since the 11th century. The city is protected against flooding by a combination of a seven-kilometer-long late 19th-century quay wall, a supporting flood protection wall built in 1979, and an upstream connecting dike. As the tidal difference continues to increase, new large-scale infrastructure works are becoming necessary.
