Saint Anne Chapel In Stoumont

The Sint-Anna Chapel is listed as a historic monument. The surrounding forest bears the same name. The chapel is located not far from the Amblève river and close to the road “Stoumont-La Gleize.” The establishment of the chapel by the lords of Froidcourt is old. Guillaume del Dyck and his wife Isabeau de Vervoz are said to have contributed to its construction in 1556. Over the centuries, the chapel has undergone several restorations and expansions. The nave was built on the site of the choir in 1666 (see date on the west facade). The chapel is constructed on a simple, rectangular plan and extended to the east by the choir. It is characterized by a hexagonal tower topped with a decorated weather vane in the shape of a rooster, the rustic porch that protects the vaulted entrance, and provides shelter for the worshippers coming to the chapel. An invocation to Saint Anna, made of copper by the pastor Bolly of Saint Denis, adorns the frontispiece at the entrance ("Saint Anne, with Your holy Child, please be there for those who pray at the gate of heaven here"). The interior is simple and features a flat roof with a single span. The choir consists of a twisted altar dating from the late seventeenth century. Because of the late age at which his mother gave birth, Saint Anna was invoked against infertility, for various diseases, and even by young girls seeking a husband. In the past, a market was held on the feast day of the saint. The chapel and its surroundings have inspired many artists, including Richard Heintz and Elysée Fabry. If you are a bit curious, you can admire the Froidcourt castle and its outbuildings (private property) along the road to Malmedy. This castle was built in 1913 on the site of old houses. The estate is the stronghold of the ancient feudal lords of Froidcourt. From 1600 until just before the revolution, the estate belonged to the De Lynden.
