A famous musical family from Retie is the Dex family. Among them is Marc Dex, one of whose three children is the singer Barbara Dex. His brother became known as the singer Juul Kabas. Together with his daughter Barbara and brother Juul Kabas, Marc Dex was inducted into the Radio 2 Hall of Fame in 2009 for "a life full of music." A funny story took place here in 1972, beautifully told by Jan Delvaux in his Dikke Delvaux series. Juul Kabas had released two anti-Beerschot songs (Vooruit na Beerschot and Wij zijn de mannekes van het Kiel), in which he jovially mocked the fact that Beerschot would be relegated to the second division. One Sunday, just after the eucharistic celebration, he was kidnapped in broad daylight by dissatisfied Beerschot supporters. They took him to a luxury hotel near the Zolder circuit. The demand was that he had to release a positive supporter song. He was released, and at the launch of that positive song, the two kidnappers also showed up. It was, therefore, a completely staged act or promotional stunt.
