The picturesque church of Saint John in Eremo dates from 1682 and is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. There was already a church here in 984, but it was destroyed during the St. Elizabeth's Flood of 1377. The outer walk in seven stations illustrates the life of John the Baptist. Prayers were offered against ailments such as the convulsions, the 'seskens' and the falling disease. Opposite the church are 'Pinte ende Sproete', two daughters of the rooster Cantecleer from the Reynaert story. A print of Reynaert is printed in the column. Originally this town was called Sint-Jansdorp, later the term 'in eremo' was added, Latin for 'in the desert'.
