At the end of the sandy avenue, you will find two chapels: the Cross Chapel from 1844 and the neo-Gothic Coronation Chapel from 1912. The Westelsebaan is the main street of Averbode. By the end of the 19th century, the devotion to the Our Lady statue of the Sacred Heart had gained so much popularity that Averbode became a well-known pilgrimage site. Following the pilgrims came tourists, and with them hotels, restaurants, and shops. In this climate of prosperity, the inhabitants of Heide, as this place was called, developed a desire for an autonomous municipality.
