The anti-tank ditch is a 33 km long artificial canal from Berendrecht on the Scheldt to Oelegem on the Albert Canal. It was dug in 1939 to stop advancing German tanks. Forts were built at regular intervals with bunkers in between, some of which you will encounter. However, the canal was unable to stop the Germans.
The military function disappeared and from that moment on, nature could take its course. In the 1970s, plans surfaced to expand the canal for the push barge between the Albert Canal and the port of Antwerp. All construction activity was banned in the wide reserve strip, but the canal was never built. The plans were shelved and the nature boys were given a piece of nature.
