Il fossato anticarro è un canale artificiale lungo 33 km che va da Berendrecht lungo l'Escalda fino a Oelegem sul Canale Alberto. Fu scavato nel 1939 per fermare i carri armati tedeschi in avanzata. A intervalli regolari furono costruiti forti con bunker tra di essi, alcuni dei quali puoi incontrare. Tuttavia, il fossato non è riuscito a fermare i tedeschi.
La funzione militare è svanita e da quel momento la natura ha potuto seguire il suo corso. Negli anni '70 emersero piani per sviluppare il fossato per la navigazione a spinta tra il Canale Alberto e il porto di Anversa. Nella vasta zona riservata furono vietate tutte le attività edilizie, ma il canale non è mai stato realizzato. I piani furono accantonati e i ragazzi della natura ottennero un pezzo di natura in più.
