The Spikkaertstraat does not refer to a Mr. or Mrs. Spikkaert; the name is derived from the Latin word spicarium (community grain barn). Further to the right, the Romans built a villa about two thousand years ago. In the vicinity now stands the Pitsaerhoeve, where a watermill operated on the Molenbeek, a tributary of the Kleine Gete, until 1959.
