Markegem is a village in the Belgian municipality of Dentergem. The population is about 760 people. The oldest mention is in 1103, when it was confirmed again that the parochial rights (for 2/3) belonged to the North French Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Amands-les-Eaux. The Saint-Amands Proosdij of Kortrijk served as an intermediary from the 10th century; after the chapel of Roeselare. It is likely that since King Dagobert, the last effective Merovingian, in the years 630, Markegem has been ecclesiastically linked with the extensive Wingene. With the feudalization from the second half of the 9th century, the later village lordship (with the church on it) was attached to the lordship of Sint-Amantsche in Wingene. The village lordship was split from the larger Sint-Amands area with the large farm Ronneke, a Celtic settlement, meaning "ring-shaped fortification," where from the 5th-6th century the Frank Marko and his people settled: Markingahaim. In 1996, the comprehensive village history "Markegem, the amusing village" (by Frans Hollevoet) appeared, as it was referred to in 1735 in the Flemish translation of Sanderus' famous "Flandria Illustrata" (1641). In 2007, a small illustrated brochure (about 20 pages), titled "Markegem's earliest history and its toponyms unraveled," was published.
