Archaeological finds indicate that Destebergen has been inhabited since 10,000 BC.
Although the height difference here is minimal, the name 'bergen' refers to the sandy elevated areas to the NE of the Scheldt. These height differences were sufficient to choose as a settlement location. In periods when the Scheldt frequently overflowed its banks, it was indeed useful to establish roads and villages on higher sandy ridges.
The second part of the name, "Destel", is derived from the Celtic "Thesle", which is a reference (though in Celtic) to the sand hill in the center of the municipality. This has now largely been leveled so you hardly feel it when you ride your bike over it.
