Right on the Solft square, the triangular village square of Berendrecht, there stood a stone tower mill until 1920. “It was a flour mill that was built sometime before 1819 and was active at the same time as our Buitenmolen,” Jorn recalls. “The two mills were even in the same hands for a while. This mill was also slightly larger than the Buitenmolen. It towered over the buildings.”
The Solftmolen was also called the Binnenmolen, for the obvious reason that it stood in a courtyard. The ground floor of the mill had a diameter of 10 meters and was set up as a residence. For a time, a café was held in the entrance portal.
In 1913, the mill was struck by lightning, and in 1920, it was demolished. After the demolition, the materials from the mill ended up with a family of masons in Stabroek, who used them to build houses. “I regret that I never saw the mill here,” Jorn says. “A mill in the middle of a village, how beautiful must that have been?”
