In 1817, the Graventoren was built as a hunting pavilion and lookout tower on the ruins of the medieval Gravenkasteel. This medieval fortress had 17 towers and mainly served for the defense of the Scheldt and the Rupel. From the top of the tower, you have a fantastic view of the Scheldt valley. In the tower, under the name 'Mercator's Shrine', a scene from Mercator's life is depicted on each floor.
