The Kotje Piepersbos borders the Hellegatbos and is owned by the municipality of Heuvelland. This forest owes its name to the village figure Cyriel Vanuxem, better known as Kotje Piepers. He and his wife Maria Lenoir were not very well off. To bring in a little money, Maria Lenoir smuggled butter across the 'Schreve'. She strapped the packages of butter to her legs and crossed the border wearing a wide long skirt. It didn't take long before she was given the name Marietje Buterbille.
