It is a Member State of the European Union located in Western Europe. It is bordered to the north by the Netherlands, to the east by Germany and Luxembourg, to the south and southwest by France, and to the northwest by the North Sea.
Located on the border between German-speaking Europe and the Romance language and cultural area, Belgium is divided into three regions. To the north is Flanders, whose Dutch-speaking population comprises about 58% of the total population. In the middle is the region of the city of Brussels, Brussels-Capital, which is officially bilingual, although predominantly French-speaking, and in which 10% of the population resides. To the south is Wallonia, which makes up 32% of the total national population, predominantly French-speaking with the exception of a small community, on the border with Germany, the German-speaking Community of German-speaking Belgium, which includes the municipalities ceded by Germany to Belgium in 1919 and annexed to Nazi Germany in 1940-1945.
