Did you know that at the corner of Gemeentestraat and Rooseveltplaats, a 69-year-old man crossed paths with a tiger? It was on the morning of June 7. A tiger had escaped from a cage at the Antwerp Zoo. It ran from Astridplein through Carnotstraat towards Gemeentestraat. In that street, the tiger first bit a horse dead. It was here at the corner of Rooseveltplaats and Gemeentestraat that the unsuspecting Mr. Van Stephout did not survive the tiger's attack. The tiger continued around the corner to Lange Sint-Annastraat and Sint-Annagang into one of the backyards. Many shots were fired at the tiger. Eventually, artist Jacques De Braekeleer was able to bring the beast down with a gunshot.
