From the 13th century, pigeon lofts were built all over Europe. It became so popular that rules for the construction of a pigeon loft were imposed. This is not illogical, as a flock of hungry pigeons could ravage your grain field. The benefits were for the owner, as pigeon droppings were excellent fertilizer. Did you know that sometimes part of the dowry was pigeon droppings! And such a fat pigeon was also a nutritious addition to your protein-poor diet.
