Nature reserve Torfbroek

The Torfbroek is a remnant of a vast and unique swamp for the low countries, fed by very calcareous groundwater. It forms a landscape whole with large open water lakes and recognizable small-scale plot structure of former meadows. It is home to a number of unique vegetations of rare hay meadows (including blue grasslands), quaking bogs and lime swamp, reed beds and open water (including whorlweed vegetation) with different plant species at their last place of growth in Flanders. It is one of the most valuable nature reserves in Western Europe.

The climate is changing, and even an ambitious climate policy will not prevent it from getting warmer this century. Scientific reports assume that our summers will become drier on average, winters warmer and more humid on average. The risk of extreme weather conditions is increasing and the sea level will rise further in the coming centuries. The consequences can be far-reaching on an ecological, social and economic level.

Robust and resilient nature is more resistant to the effects of climate change. Natural climate buffers can grow with the pace of climate change, which is also cost-efficient. More space for moist nature also allows for buffering water in times of abundance and retention for drier periods. This reduces the risk of flooding and increases water safety.
