This is the former Dental Institute George Eastman designed by architect Michel Polak in 1935. George Eastman (1854-1932) was the founder of the famous photography company Eastman Kodak. In addition, he specialized as a patron in the generalization of dental care, a necessary evil in a society that was increasingly addicted to sugar. The sculpture above the entrance door depicts the benefactor on his deathbed, surrounded by grateful women and children.
Inside, there were several rows of chairs where dentists treated children continuously. To make them feel a bit more at ease, the walls in the waiting room are painted with fables by Jean de La Fontaine. In vain. For many, a visit to the Eastman Institute was a traumatic experience.
Today, this beautiful building houses 'The House of European History'. During the renovation, the building received a striking rectangular glass structure on its roof. The strongly vertical dimension is further enhanced inside by a remarkable artwork that spans all floors from the ceiling. Highly recommended and furthermore free.
