This slate quarry, which is the last in the Aise Valley to have closed (in 1977), has been developed since 1997 to welcome the public ('At the Heart of Slate'). It includes two contiguous parts on the surface: to the east, the infrastructures for welcoming tourists and to the west, a large spoil tip partly exploited in the 1970s, which is colonized by predominantly young woody plants and a less diverse herbaceous vegetation than on other spoil tips in the Aise Valley. The current biological interest of this site lies in the presence of some species of ferns (e.g., Gymnocarpium robertianum and Phegopteris connectilis), the beetle Cicindela campestris, and several species of day butterflies from the red list.
Public access: Since 2001, the spoil tip seems to be occasionally visited as part of tourism and sports activities (Semois Aventure).
Type: Site of Great Biological Interest (SGIB)
