Jamioulx

With a slightly larger area than 8 hectares, the Jamioulx nature reserve occupies the alluvial plain of the Eau d'Heure, on the right bank of this tributary of the Sambre, not far south of the village of Jamioulx. It is bordered to the west by the Charleroi-Couvin railway line, to the east by the Laminoir district, and to the southeast by the Bois de la Belle Taille. The site includes a wetland occupying the alluvial plain, a wooded slope, and an abandoned Visean limestone quarry since the 1950s, including former lime kilns and exposed rocks. Due to its history, varied geology, and diverse environments, the reserve and its surroundings present multiple interests, both educational, scientific, and archaeological... The flora includes various heritage species, including the pyramidal orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis), the broad-leaved orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis), the hairy teasel (Dipsacus pilosus), and the marsh speedwell (Veronica scutellata). From a faunal perspective, noteworthy is the important role played by the former lime kilns for the hibernation of bats, by the rocks as a nesting site for some rock-dwelling birds like the Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo), and by the alluvial wet meadows as a breeding ground for amphibians and many invertebrates.
