"View of Temse" by Guillaume Vogels

The impression that Guillaume Vogels gave of the river was a lot of dull gray, a bit of brown, a hint of green. The explanation for the color knot around the Scheldt lies in the high turbidity of the river. The Scheldt has a bed with a lot of silt and even more sand. To this, one must add phytoplankton and industrial pollution. Due to the strong flow velocity, which is characteristic of the river, it leads to a very high turbidity of the water. Researchers have even determined that the Scheldt is nowhere as turbid as in the area around the mouth of the Rupel, close to Temse. It is the countless particles that cause a unique refraction of light and give color to the river water.
