The history of this church dates back to the early 14th century. At that time, a simple chapel with a thatched roof stood on this site. As was often done, a larger church was built in the same place over the centuries. This was also necessary. In 1465, Adriaen Sanders, the lord of Cleydael, brought the right arm of Saint Leonard from France. This relic attracted many pilgrims, and soon the church became too small. You can find the gravestone of this lord of Cleydael in front of the altar inside the church. During the iconoclasm, the church was severely damaged. It was the Spanish family Del Rio who took care of the restoration of the building. Moreover, many adaptations and renovations followed, and in the 19th century, the church acquired its current appearance. Around the church, you can still find some old graves.
