Historic railway tunnel in harmony with a historic neighbourhood road

The old 'Hooyvettersvoetwegweg 'Chemin 59', 'Sentier d'Eppeghem à Weerde' runs under the first railway line in Belgium, which ran between Brussels and Mechelen. On 5 May 1835, three locomotives ran for the first time on the European mainland from Brussels to Mechelen. The locomotives: 'Elephant', the 'Stephenson' and 'The Arrow'.

The 'Hooyvettersvoetweg' officially starts, but is no longer passable there, in Eppegem, runs over the Senne and continues via a small tunnel, which is now also inaccessible under the railway. Nowadays you follow the Hooyvettersvoetweg from the Huidevettersstraat and further under the stone railway tunnel, which is fortunately still accessible. Once you arrive at the Zenneoever you follow the Senne to the Weerde Molen. This route originally ran completely differently, but today you can follow the meanders of the Senne, which is certainly not bad.
