Groenpool Vinderhout forests

The Vinderhoutse Bossen is an area with an attractive landscape and very valuable nature. This green pole extends over Drongen, Mariakerke and Vinderhoute and covers an area of 640 hectares. The reforestation of the area will be done in phases and should be completed by 2045. There will be a network of walking and cycling paths along which you can cross the area and which connects to the Valley of the Old Kale or Urban Nature Reserve Bourgoyen-Ossemeersen. The Vinderhoutse Bossen already consists of 70 hectares of wet swamp forest. Such forests are rare in Flanders and even in Europe. Another small but valuable forest is the Rijkegasthuisbos, where the first new pieces of forest were planted in 2014. And then there is also the area of the Green Fields, a park with lots of forest, an orchard, a large pond and meadows. The existing forests will be planted in the coming years. A total of 156 hectares of forest will be added. In some places, the landscape will be more of a mosaic of forest and grassland. Characteristic there are the 'bulks'. These are narrow, convex meadows or fields surrounded by ditches, pollard trees and wooded edges. Finally, there are also the Lieve and the Meirebeek, 2 watercourses that cross the Vinderhoutse Bossen and give them an extra dimension. The Vinderhoutse Bossen will have 3 portals where you can start a visit: De Campagne, Domein Claeys-Boúúaert and Landgoed Leeuwenhof.
