These houses have no door facing the current street. The front door is located in the alley at the back of the houses. This allowed the workers to go directly from their homes to the nearby brickworks where they worked. The row of houses became commonly known as Averechtse Root. The houses were small and at that time lacked water or electricity. Water was obtained from the village pump or from a stone well. The toilets were 'conveniences'. These houses all had a plank with a hole in it and were located outside, sometimes all next to each other.
