Niel is a municipality on the northern right bank of the Rupel River. At one time, there used to be plenty of brickyards here. Now that this industry has disappeared, nature is gradually gaining the upper hand in many abandoned places and in the clay pits. This also explains the origin of the Walenhoek nature reserve. Near Niel you can take the ferry to Wintam, which is known for its nature reserves and the large sea lock that connects the Scheldt with the Brussels-Scheldt Maritime Canal.
