The Riekend Rest Point (= The smallest museum in East Flanders.)
The Riekend Rest Point is a small museum, unique in Flanders, that sheds light on a completely unknown and little-studied aspect of history: transportation of manure over water from the city to the countryside.
Under the title 'From urban dung to sandy soil', there is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the bear and manure trade from the 17th century to somewhere in the 1930s. The cities faced significant waste and manure problems, and the countryside could use these products for fertilizing agricultural land. A busy trade thus developed along the waterways between the city and the countryside.
