The long slag heap is one of the mounds resulting from the dumping of the unusable part of the iron ore. It is 50 meters higher than the surrounding landscape and offers a magnificent view over the Hoge Kempen.
You have a view of the twin slag heap: it consists of two hills and is 10 metres higher than the long slag heap.
You can also see the red slag heap. This is also known as the 'Visuvius' of Eisden. It still contains a lot of coal because the separation process was not yet well developed at the start of the mine's operation. This coal can ignite on its own, causing the temperature inside the slag heap to rise to hundreds of degrees and a plume of smoke can be seen in cold weather.
