Gilbert Desmet, aka ‘Smetje van Lichtervelde’, was an internationally renowned second-rank racer in the 1950s and 1960s. During that period he won more than 100 races, including Paris-Tours. On the picture you see Gilbert Desmet in his café. After his cycling career was over, Smetje spent more than 20 years behind the counter of his Café Paris-Tours along the Roeselare-Bruges road. His café’s neon sign can now be seen at the WieMu cycling museum in Roeselare. Photo: Collection WieMu Roeselare.
