Haachtsesteenweg

The Haachtsesteenweg was one of the oldest paved roads in Brussels. Today, it is the artery of the Turkish-Brussels neighborhood. There is a lively hustle and bustle on the narrow sidewalks in front of the shops, hair salons, mosques, and eateries. The pizzerias serve pide, the Turkish variant of pizza. On the right side at no. 88, the Fatih Camii mosque has a modest minaret, a rare example in Brussels. Just past Philomènestraat, Metin Pide (no. 94) has a beautiful oriental interior. Owner Metin Eder was once the alderman for Foreign Affairs of Emirdag, from Brussels! Most Turkish people in Brussels come from this region in the Turkish interior.

King Car still gets all the space on the Haachtsesteenweg, which has a very bad reputation due to street races and traffic accidents.
In November 2017, Stephanie Verbraekel, a journalist at De Standaard, was killed here by a road pirate. The citizen movement 1030/0 has since been campaigning for a traffic-safe municipality. The name of the movement refers to the postal code of Schaarbeek, and their ultimate goal: zero traffic deaths.
