Patients on the mend, soldiers who were quartered there, soldiers from the front on leave, and medical staff usually tried to make the best of their involuntary stay in a foreign town. The horrors of war, such as the funerals of fallen soldiers, were sometimes skilfully concealed by the occupying authorities.
