Even in a hospital town there was room for relaxation and enjoyment. Patients on the mend, soldiers who were quartered there, soldiers from the front on leave, and medical staff usually tried to make the best of their involuntary stay in a foreign town. The horrors of war, such as the funerals of fallen soldiers, were sometimes skilfully concealed by the occupying authorities.
